The report, led by Professor Don Berwick, follows five months of intensive work to examine the lessons for NHS patient safety from healthcare and other industrial systems throughout the world. Government Opportunities

Clinical Director for NHSScotland, Professor Jason Leitch, sat on the Berwick Review panel.

Responding to the outcome of the review, Professor Jason Leitch said:

“The standards of care highlighted by the Francis Inquiry were completely unacceptable, and no patient should receive poor levels of care when they go into hospital.

“By sitting on the Berwick Review panel, I was able to apply my experience of setting up the Scottish Patient Safety Programme, and some of the lessons learnt in Scotland.

“The Berwick review calls for safety collaboratives and networks to be established across NHS England. This is precisely what NHSScotland did in 2008 with the establishment of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme.

“Don Berwick’s vision for safety in the NHS in England is absolutely in keeping with the established principles of the NHS in Scotland. While there is no room for complacency, we are proud of the integrated, collaborative approach to healthcare in Scotland.

“Scotland is the first country in the world to implement a national patient safety programme across the whole healthcare system and has some of the safest and best hospitals in the world. This has resulted in an 11.8 per cent national reduction in hospital standardised mortality ratios since 2007, and we are working towards a reduction of 20 per cent by 2015.”

“We are fully considering the recommendations in detail, to identify what we can learn that could be relevant for the NHS in Scotland.”
